Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti’s southern peninsula on 5th October 2016 with winds of over 225 kilometres per hour, leaving over 900 dead. All crops which sustained the country’s population of 11 million were wiped out. Even the presidential election which was scheduled to take place a few days after the storm was cancelled.
The worst hit area was the southern peninsula where almost all the homes were destroyed and the damages are greater than those caused by the devastating earthquake of 2010. The suffering of the people is intense as they have no food and water. Many cases of cholera outbreak have been reported. After almost one month of this natural disaster, electricity has not yet been restored.
