A team of Sathya Sai medical volunteers from Philippines and other countries conducted medical camps in the town of Ormoc and on the island of Biliran in early February 2014. The medical team provided free services and medicines to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Even though the medical camps were held in ‘make shift’ locations, they were well organized with excellent support from the local healthcare volunteers. Each medical camp was divided into four sections- registration area, waiting area, consulting area and pharmacy. The registration area was used to obtain basic information, vital data, and medical history.
On 10th February 2014, 365 patients were seen in the town of Ormoc, which is a two-hour drive from Tacloban. On 11th February, 395 patients were seen at the same location. The volunteers then moved to the island of Billiran to serve the local people. Between 12th and 14th February, a medical camp was organized in in Biliran, where 310 patients were seen in Atipolo, 465 patients were seen in Calungpang and 388 patients were served in Larrazbal. More than 400 kg of general medicines, including analgesics, antibiotics, and di-arrhea medicines were distributed. Food supplements and milk powders were also distributed to the affected population. The local officials and residents were very appreciative of the medical services provided by the Sathya Sai volunteers.
