As we all know, central Italy was struck by a major earthquake on Wednesday, 24th August 2016. The 6.2 magnitude quake struck a cluster of mountain communities 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome as people slept, causing hundreds of deaths, widespread destruction and general havoc. After an initial period of stabilization, the local authorities have now allowed the Sathya Sai International Organisation (SSIO) of Italy to start helping with disaster relief efforts, including medical aid, temporary shelter, food and supplies.

Recent Developments

Leaders of the SSIO in Italy met with the Italian government authorities and the affected families on 21st September 2016 to discuss how we can best serve the victims of the natural disaster.  The SSIO has agreed to assist with the provision of temporary housing, by providing heating systems for the winter, household items and kitchen facilities. In addition, Sathya Sai volunteers are also committed to providing a complete housing unit for a family of 10, which includes orphan children who have lost their parents in the earthquake. SSIO representatives continue to work with the Italian government authorities to provide needed services to those rendered homeless and destitute by the quake.

How Can We Help

The SSIO has already transmitted funds to the Italian Organisation for disaster relief activities. Many Sathya Sai devotees and SSIO officers have expressed a desire to help in the ongoing relief efforts and actively participate in serving those who were afflicted by the natural disaster. The Sri Sathya Sai World Foundation (SSSWF) is a registered non-profit charitable organisation in the USA, which directly supports the work of the SSIO throughout the world. Volunteer Resources

The SSIO Disaster Relief Committee is monitoring the situation in Italy closely. Status updates will be posted on this website periodically, including service opportunities and requirements. Those who wish to volunteer for service in the affected areas of Italy are requested to visit the Logistics/Volunteer tab on this website for further information related to registration and logistics.

In addition to the disaster relief efforts by the SSIO, let us all pray together to Swami to shower His divine blessings on our brothers and sisters afflicted by the earthquake in Italy.  Baba says that sincere prayer is one of the most effective ways to relieve the grief and suffering of victims.
